This dossier is a summary of information from my last few visits, and will explain why I believe this city to be the best backpacker city in Victoria....and also a great place to live.

Mildura: facts and figures.
Mildura has a mediterranean like climate and receives on average, more sunny days per year than Queensland!

Rex Airlines has 44 flights per week between Mildura, Melbourne & Sydney.

The Mildura-Murray Outback region produces about 33% of all Australia's wine, which makes it a BIG town for backpacking.

This is no tiny backpacker town like most fruit growing areas are in Oz -
The Mildura area is home to a population of environ 50,000 personnes over an area of 22,330 square kms.

Fruit picking & Backpacking: The advantage with Mildura is that there is work to be found in one crop or another all year round, really more than any other region of Victoria.

January - May - Grape picking
May - Jan Citrus
May - Feb Vegetables
May -September Grape pruning
September - December Asparagus

See www.jobsearch.gov.au/harvesttrail for a list of the smaller towns in the region (several) which also offer picking work, such as Red Cliffs.

Lots of palm trees, a laid back atmosphere in the city

Pas de stresse de traffic, no parking meters, and you can cross the road wherever you like and cars will courteously and patiently wait for you to cross (rather a pedestrian friendly city - also quite unique for Victoria, je crois)

The city is often described as like an oasis at the edge of the desert - and it IS at the edge of the desert. Cross the bridge at one end of the city, and you'll find yourself in New South Wales, and the green lawns and parks disappear and the earth becomes dry immediately as the influence of the Murray river irrigation lessens.

Not only is Mildura a fully equipped city, but there's even plenty of tourist attractions as well.
